I have the honour to request that you will be pleased to lay this letter with the enclosures before His Excellency the Governor for his decision.
In consequence of a Communication from my Uncle Lieutenant General, the late Sir Colin Campbell, then Governor of Ceylon, forwarding to me the correspondence between Sir John Davis and himself (a true Copy of which is herewith enclosed) I left Calcutta where I was in fair practice - to come to the aid and assistance of Her Majesty's Government in this Colony upon the understanding that "I was to receive £750 per annum as Acting Attorney.
